Rachel Alexandra opened her three-year-old campaign in style as she drew well clear and cruised to an eight-length victory under wraps on Sunday in the $50,000 Martha Washington Stakes at Oaklawn Park.

Ridden by Calvin Borel for trainer Hal Wiggins, the Medaglia d’Oro filly stalked the pace off the rail in second through three-quarters of a mile before making her bid on the turn and accelerating quickly clear. She drove unchallenged to the wire, covering one mile in 1:36.40 on a track rated as fast.

Afleet Deceit finished second, a nose in front of Peach Brew.

Rachel Alexandra won three of six starts last year, including the 1 1/16-mile Golden Rod Stakes (G2) on November 29 at Churchill Downs. Owned by L and M Partners, she has won four of seven starts with two runner-up finishes and has earned $231,440.
