Jeff Singer has purchased California Derby runner-up Axel Foley, as the Officer colt approaches a start on Saturday in the El Camino Real Derby (G3) at Golden Gate Fields.
Lincoln Collins’s Kern Thoroughbreds brokered the private deal with English trainer John Best’s Kent Bloodstock. Best trained Axel Foley for his first three starts, including a sixth-place finish in the CashCall Futurity (G1) on December 20, before turning him over to Doug O’Neill.
Axel Foley will remain with O’Neill and wear blinkers for the first time in the El Camino Real Derby.
Lane’s End Breeders’ Futurity (G1) winner Square Eddie and Eddie Logan Stakes winner Flashmans Papers (GB) also made the transition from Best to O’Neill last fall as part of a private acquisition.
Singer bought a majority interest in eventual Grade 2 winner Teuflesberg a few days before his 17th-place finish in the 2006 Kentucky Derby Presented by Yum! Brands (G1).
