Jockey Glenn Corbett piloted 1.70-to-1 favorite Souvenir Winner to victory in the fourth race at Turf Paradise on Tuesday, securing his 3,000th career win.
“It’s a milestone to be sure, and it feels that way,” Corbett said.
Corbett, 44, started his career in 1985, winning his first race at Penn National Race Course. Corbett won the Turf Paradise riding title in 2007 and currently ranks second at the track by wins and purse earnings.
Corbett has won 173 stakes in his career, many of them coming at Turf Paradise and Prairie Meadows Racetrack. His most lucrative career win came on June 27 aboard Ez Dreamer in the $125,000 Iowa Sprint Handicap.
“The first question people ask when they find out you’re a jockey is, ‘Have you ridden in the Kentucky Derby?’ ” said Corbett, who rode Lusty Latin to a 15th-place finish in the 2002 Derby. “As a rider, once you’ve experienced the thrill of riding in the Derby, you dream of going back.”
Corbett may return to Churchill Downs on the first Saturday in May in 2010 with Uh Oh Bango, who finished second in the Boyd Gaming’s Delta Jackpot Stakes (G3) on December 4. Uh Oh Bango earned $150,000 in graded stakes earnings with the runner-up finish.
“If all goes well, Uh Oh Bango will take me there again,” Corbett said.
