Calder postpones Grade 3 races
after barns quarantined

Posted: Tuesday, December 01, 2009 2:15 PM

Calder Race Course has postponed the $100,000 Tropical Turf Handicap (G3) and $100,000 My Charmer Handicap (G3), originally slated for Saturday, because of a quarantine of the track’s stable area.

On Monday, officials at the Miami Gardens, Florida track announced that three barns have been placed under quarantine after a horse previously stabled at Calder tested positive for equine herpesvirus (EHV-1) at the University of Florida College of Veterinary Medicine.

The horse was shipped from Calder to the clinic in Gainesville, Florida on Sunday after exhibiting neurological symptoms of EHV-1. According to Daily Racing Form, Bill White trains the horse, whose identity has not been made public.

The quarantine bars horses from shipping in or out of the three barns at Calder for three weeks. Horses in the barns also will not be allowed to train with the rest of the Calder population. Instead, they will have access to the main track on dark days following general training hours and to the training track on race days after general training hours.

Horses also will be barred from shipping into Calder for two weeks, effective Monday. The track is working with the Florida Department of Agriculture and its Division of Animal Industry to protect its horse population

The two stakes were postponed since many of the horses entered in the races are not yet on the grounds. Both races will be rescheduled at a later date.

Racing otherwise continues as scheduled at Calder, starting with Thursday’s card and including Saturday’s ten-race program.
