Apprentice Michael Straight injured at Arlington

Arlington Park apprentice jockey Michael Straight was seriously injured in a spill in the eighth race on Wednesday.

Straight fell to the track when his mount, Im No Gentleman, went down near the quarter pole in the $10,000 maiden claiming race. Straight, 24, was transported to Lutheran General Hospital in Park Ridge, Illinois. Hospital officials told Arlington that his vital signs were good and that he was scheduled for back surgery within 24 hours.

Straight’s twin brother, Matthew, a jockey at Ellis Park, said surgery on Thursday afternoon was scheduled to last several hours.

The Straight brothers both graduated from Chris McCarron’s North American Racing Academy in Lexington. Michael Straight won with his first mount on March 6 at Tampa Bay Downs aboard Ready Ruler.

Straight has 23 wins in the Arlington meet and 39 wins overall from 372 mounts.

Im No Gentleman died on the track. Arlington spokesman David Zenner said it is unclear whether Im No Gentleman clipped heels, as listed in the chart, or had a pulmonary issue.

Clayton Pierce trained the Illinois-bred gelding for owner-breeder Jay Collier.
