Sidney’s Candy seized command in early stretch and drew clear to a four-length triumph in track-record time in seventh race on Saturday at Del Mar.
Ridden by Joe Talamo, the Sid and Jenny Craig Trusts’ homebred two-year-old Candy Ride (Arg) colt chased early pacesetter Oceanographer from second before easily dispatching that opponent to complete 5½ furlongs in 1:02.71 as the 9-to-10 favorite on the synthetic Polytrack surface.
The time eclipsed the previous record of 1:03.26 set by Streamin Heat in the California Thoroughbred Breeders’ Association Stakes on July 18, 2008.
Sidney’s Candy emphatically rebounded from a runner-up finish by a head in his debut in a 5½-furlong maiden special weight race on July 25 at the seaside track for trainer John Sadler.
Bred in Kentucky, Sidney’s Candy is one of two winners from as many starters out of the placed Storm Cat mare Fair Exchange. His grandam is multiple Grade 1 winner Exchange.
Notable members of the immediate family include Canadian champions and sires Steady Growth and Kingsbridge.
