TURF ANALYSIS:
A Telling twist in the Breeders’ Cup Turf division

Posted: Tuesday, August 18, 2009 2:48 PM

by Ed DeRosa

With his upset victory in the Sword Dancer Invitational Stakes (G1), Alex and JoAnn Lieblong’s Telling not only stamped himself a contender for the Emirates Airline Breeders’ Cup Turf (G1) but also flattered the results of the Arlington Million Stakes (G1).

Telling entered the Sword Dancer off a fifth-place finish to Just as Well in the Arlington Handicap (G1). Just as Well finished second to Gio Ponti in the Arlington Million while Telling went on to win the Sword Dancer at odds of 33-to-1 by two lengths over 2004 Breeders’ Cup Turf winner Better Talk Now.

In Europe, Casual Conquest added to his burgeoning resume with a win in the Royal Whip Stakes (Ire-G2) on August 16 at the Curragh. The Tattersalls Gold Cup (Ire-G1) winner could contest the Qatar Prix de l’Arc de Triomphe (Fr-G1) on October 4 at Longchamp, but trainer Dermot Weld told Irish Times that a North American campaign beginning with the Canadian International Stakes (Can-G1) on October 17 at Woodbine is a possibility as well.

Gio Ponti is unquestionably the leader in the North American male Turf division after four consecutive Grade 1 victories, but the Tale of the Cat colt may not race on the grass in the Breeders’ Cup World Championships.

At least three Breeders’ Cup options are on the table for Gio Ponti; the TVG Breeders’ Cup Mile (G1) (he won over the course and distance to start his Grade 1-winning streak in the Frank E. Kilroe Mile Handicap (G1), defeating Ventura), the Breeders’ Cup Turf at 1 1/2 miles, and the Breeders’ Cup Classic (G1) going 1 1/4 miles on Pro Ride. Gio Ponti has never raced beyond 1 3/8 miles, a distance he handled when winning the Man o’ War Stakes (G1).

Two other turf stars with multiple Breeders’ Cup options are the European Group 1-winning duo of Sea The Stars and Mastercraftsman, who finished first and second, respectively, in the Juddmonte International Stakes (Eng-G1) on August 18 at York.
