Emirates Airline Dubai World Cup (UAE-G1) winner Well Armed came out of his last-place finish in Sunday’s San Diego Handicap (G2) with an ankle chip.

Trainer Eoin Harty told Daily Racing Form the six-year-old Tiznow gelding would undergo surgery at Alamo Pintado Equine Clinic in Solvang, California, within the next few days, which would knock him out of the Pacific Classic Stakes (G1) and probably the Breeders’ Cup World Championships.

The San Diego was Well Armed’s first start since his record World Cup romp by 14 lengths on March 28.

Bred and owned by WinStar Farm, Well Armed rebounded with authority after his last trip to the sidelines because of injury. He underwent knee surgery in 2006 and ended up fracturing his pelvis in a stall accident.

Following a lengthy rehabilitation with WinStar co-owner Bill Casner, Well Armed returned to the races in October 2007 and won the ’08 San Antonio Handicap (G2) and Goodwood Stakes (G1) prior to his World Cup triumph.

WinStar also owns Pacific Classic candidate Colonel John.
