Friesan Fire shook off the cobwebs of being idle since winning the Louisiana Derby (G2) on March 14 by working five furlongs in :57.80 on a busy Monday morning at Churchill Downs in which the track also announced that Florida Derby Presented by Blackberry (G1) winner Quality Road would not race on Saturday in the Kentucky Derby Presented by Yum! Brands (G1).

Friesan Fire’s workout is similar to the work trainer Larry Jones gave Hard Spun during the Derby week two years ago. The eventual runner-up to champion Street Sense in the 2007 Derby went five furlongs in :57.53 in his final move before the classic.

Eight contenders worked on Monday with most going through their paces after the renovation break. Joining Friesan Fire in working five furlongs were Pioneerof the Nile (1:01, video), Chocolate Candy (:59.20, video), Win Willy (1:02.40, video), and Join in the Dance (1:00.20). Flying Private worked four furlongs early in the morning in :47.20.

Chocolate Candy, Friesan Fire, Join in the Dance, Pioneerof the Nile, and Win Willy all worked shortly before Churchill closed the track to training after an accident at the finish line. Coolmore Lexington Stakes (G2) winner Advice breezed four furlongs in :47.20 when the track reopened while Mine That Bird breezed five furlongs in 1:02.
