Mr Napper Tandy (GB) closed with a sustained charge from the outside to overhaul pacesetter Yacht Spotter in the final strides of the $300,000 San Francisco Mile Stakes (G2) on Saturday at Golden Gate Fields.

The five-year-old Bahamian Bounty horse halted a ten-race losing skid and earned his first career stakes victory in the San Francisco Mile. Rallying from last at the quarter pole, Mr Napper Tandy nipped Yacht Spotter by a head under Julio Garcia while completing one mile in 1:36.07 on firm turf.

Trained by Jack Carava for owner La Canada Stables, Mr Napper Tandy entered off a runner-up finish in the Arcadia Handicap (G2) on April 4 at Santa Anita Park. Entering the San Francisco Mile, Mr Napper Tandy had not visited the winner’s circle since a clear victory in a optional claiming race in March 2008 at Santa Anita, but he regained his winning form at Golden Gate.

Yacht Spotter set an uncontested pace under Alex Bisono through an opening quarter in :24.20 and a half-mile in :48.17. Mr Napper Tandy trailed the field early and was more than nine lengths behind Yacht Spotter at the quarter pole.

Mr Napper Tandy swept into contention with an explosive turn of foot and steadily reeled in Yacht Spotter to prevail at odds of 6.60-to-1.

Bold Chieftain finished three-quarters of a length behind runner-up Yacht Spotter.

Out of the Inchinor (GB) mare Starfleet, Mr Napper Tandy improved to four wins in 23 career starts and boosted his bankroll to $434,819.
