Three more commit to Kentucky Derby

Posted: Saturday, April 18, 2009 3:55 PM

The 20-horse field for the Kentucky Derby Presented by Yum! Brands (G1) continues to take shape as the connections of three more horses on Saturday confirmed they will join the Derby fray.

The Louisville Courier-Journal reported on Saturday that Rebel Stakes (G2) winner Win Willy, Arkansas Derby (G2) third-place finisher Summer Bird, and Canadian champion Mine That Bird will contest the United States classic race.

Win Willy ranks 15th, Mine That Bird 20th, and Summer Bird 24th in graded stakes earnings. The Derby field is determined by graded stakes earnings if more than 20 horses are entered. Mafaaz (GB) earned an automatic starting spot in the classic field, but his connections opted not to send the horse to Churchill Downs.

The Courier-Journal also reported that Join in the Dance and Take the Points both are possible for the Kentucky Derby if they qualify.
