Swift Temper led at every point of call and tenaciously dug in to hold back hard-charging favorite Santa Teresita for a narrow win in the $200,000 Sixty Sails Handicap (G3) on Saturday at Hawthorne Race Course.

Trained by Dale Romans for owner Mark Stanley, the five-year-old Giant’s Causeway mare outdueled Mizzcan’tbewrong for the early lead and set moderate fractions of :24.44 for the first quarter and :48.90 for a half-mile under Chris Emigh.

She opened a 1½-length lead near the five-eighths pole, where Grade 1 winner and 9-to-10 favorite Santa Teresita was blocked along the rail and was steadied by Joe Talamo as she tried to advance into contention from fourth.

Quick Noticed engaged Swift Temper around the turn as Santa Teresita found clear running room and accelerated to challenge the front-runners in early stretch.

Swift Temper shook off Quick Notice and willingly responded to brisk urging from Emigh to repel Santa Teresita and win by a head. Swift Temper covered 1 1/8 miles in 1:51.70 on a track rated as fast for her first win in three starts this year.

Quick Notice finished 2¼ lengths back in third in the six-horse field.

"Mr. Romans said to just get [her] out of the gate and go with wherever you're sitting," Emigh said. "We hooked up with the outside horse [Mizzcan’tbewrong] and my horse wanted to run off a little bit but then she relaxed on the backside. I was hoping that she was fit enough but she was. She really dug in and didn't give up."

Swift Temper entered off a runner-up finish in the Sabin Stakes (G3) (click here for video of the Sabin) on February 20 at Gulfstream Park. She improved her overall record to four wins in 24 starts and boosted her lifetime bankroll to $353,059.

Bred in Kentucky by Richard Nip and Omar Trevino, Swift Temper is out of the Seeking the Gold mare Glasgow’s Gold.
