Canadian champion Dancing Allstar set a determined pace, opened a clear lead on the backstretch, and earned her first graded stakes victory with a 1 3/4-length win in the $124,108 Whimsical Stakes (Can-G3) on Saturday at Woodbine.

Dancing Allstar made her first start in more than seven months in the six-furlong race for older fillies and mares. The Millennium Allstar filly, who won the Sovereign Award as Canada’s 2007 champion two-year-old filly, entered off a fifth-place finish in the Hong Kong Jockey Club Handicap on August 30 at Hastings Race Course.

Dancing Allstar showed speed at the start of the Whimsical Stakes and led by one length through a quarter-mile in :23.22 and two lengths through a half-mile in :45.60 under Jim McAleney. After increasing her advantage to three lengths in early stretch, Dancing Allstar held off runner-up Smart Surprise and won in 1:09.16 on Woodbine’s synthetic Polytrack surface.

Grade 3-placed multiple stakes winner Smart Surprise, the 0.95-to-1 favorite in a field of seven, finished three-quarters of a length in front of Grade 3-placed stakes winner and third-place finisher Proud Heiress.

Terry Jordan trains Dancing Allstar for Bahadur Cheema. The four-year-old filly earned each of her three wins last year in Canadian stakes races. She also finished third in the 2008 Azalea Stakes (G3) at Calder Race Course.

Dancing Allstar posted her ninth win in 14 starts and increased her earnings to $496,229. Bred in British Columbia by Bent Tree Farm, Dancing Allstar is one of two winners from as many starters out of the placed Honor Grades mare High On Believen.
