Kentucky Derby Challenge winner Mafaaz (GB) will be transferred to the barn of trainer Kiaran McLaughlin on Thursday at Keeneland Race Course.
The three-year-old Medicean colt, who finished eighth in the Toyota Blue Grass Stakes (G1) on April 11 at Keeneland in his most recent start, was previously trained by John Gosden for owner Sheikh Hamdan bin Rashid al Maktoum’s Shadwell Stable.
Mafaaz secured a starting spot in the Kentucky Derby Presented by Yum! Brands (G1) with his March 18 win in the Kentucky Derby Challenge at Kempton Park. McLaughlin’s brother and assistant trainer, Neal McLaughlin, said he did not know whether Mafaaz’s connections will start the horse in the United States classic race.
“We can look at that [the Kentucky Derby], and if they want, we can do that, or if they want to do something else he can go to New York,” Neal McLaughlin said.
