Multiple graded stakes winner Old Fashioned underwent successful surgery on Tuesday at Rood and Riddle Equine Hospital in Lexington and has been retired.

Old Fashioned came out of a runner-up finish in the Arkansas Derby (G2) (click here for video of the Arkansas Derby) on April 11 with a slab fracture of the right knee. Trained by Larry Jones for owner Rick Porter’s Fox Hill Farm, Old Fashioned was shipped from Hot Springs, Arkansas, to Rood and Riddle, where he was treated by Larry Bramlage, D.V.M.

“The surgery went very well this morning,” Porter said on www.rockportharbor.com. “Dr. Bramlage told me that it would be almost impossible for him to return to anywhere near his level as a racehorse. After my discussion with Dr. Bramlage, I decided to retire him.

“I am not sure if I will stand him myself in either Kentucky or possibly Florida next year. There is always the possibility of selling him as a stallion prospect.”

Old Fashioned was the one of the early favorites for the Kentucky Derby after posting four consecutive wins to start his career. The Unbridled’s Song colt was undefeated in three starts as a two-year-old, closing his campaign with a 7 1/4-length victory in the Remsen Stakes (G2) (click here for video of the Remsen) on November 29 at Aqueduct.

After opening his 2009 campaign with a 3 1/4-length victory in the Southwest Stakes (G3) (click here for video of the Southwest), Old Fashioned cemented his status as a leading contender for the United States classics. He was a fixture atop the THOROUGHBRED TIMES Road to the Triple Crown poll until he suffered his first loss—a runner-up finish to Win Willy in the Rebel Stakes (G2) (click here for video of the Rebel) on March 14.

With four wins and two runner-up finishes in six career starts, Old Fashioned has banked $583,280 in purse earnings. He is out of multiple Group 1-placed graded stakes winner Collect Call, by Meadowlake. Collect Call finished third in the 2001 Kentucky Oaks (G1).
