Leparoux wins Bill Shoemaker Award

Julien Leparoux rode three winners at the Breeders’ Cup World Championships on November 6-7 and was honored as the recipient of the seventh annual Bill Shoemaker Award.

The award, established in 2003, is given to the top jockey at the event. No other jockey this year rode multiple winners during the two-day World Championships at the Oak Tree meeting at Santa Anita Park.

Leparoux rode two winners on Championship Friday: She Be Wild to a three-quarter-length score in the Grey Goose Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Fillies (G1) (video) and Informed Decision to a 1¼-length triumph in the Sentient Jet Breeders’ Cup Filly and Mare Sprint (G1) (video). He followed up on Championship Saturday with a victory at 21.30-to-1 odds aboard Furthest Land, who won the Breeders’ Cup Dirt Mile by three-quarters of a length (video).

Previous award winners, named for late Racing Hall of Fame jockey Bill Shoemaker, are Alex Solis in 2003 at Santa Anita Park, John Velazquez in ‘04 at Lone Star Park, Garrett Gomez in ‘05 at Belmont Park, Frankie Dettori in ‘06 at Churchill Downs, and Gomez in ‘07 at Monmouth Park and in ‘08 at Santa Anita.
