Dominguez breaks Belmont meet record for wins
Jockey Ramon Dominguez guided I’ve Got Speed to victory in the fifth race on Friday at Belmont Park, setting a new mark for wins during the Elmont, New York, track’s spring/summer meet.
The win was Dominguez’s 93rd of the meet, breaking the previous record of 92 set by Racing Hall of Fame jockey Angel Cordero Jr. 27 years ago.
“It’s very, very exciting,” Dominguez said. “It didn’t even cross my mind coming into the meet, and it’s just a reflection of the type of opportunities that have been given to me. This is just a result of that support.”
Dominguez won four straight riding titles at Delaware Park from 2004-’07 before concentrating his efforts full-time on the New York circuit. Dominguez led the nation in wins in 2001 and ’03 and won the ’04 Issac Murphy Award as the jockey with the highest winning percentage.
