Meet figures decline at Arlington

Average daily attendance declined by 4% and on-track handle fell 12% during the 96-day Arlington Park meeting that ended on September 21.

Statistics compiled by the Illinois Racing Board show daily on-track averages of 7,808 in attendance and $508,893 for wagering.

At Illinois off-track and intertrack sites and at out-of-state wagering outlets, the declines were a more moderate 5% in-state and 2% out-of-state.

 The average all-sources handle totaled $4,291,139 in 2008 versus $4,447,908 last year, a dip of 3.5%.

There was a slight increase in the number of fatal injuries to horses in 2008 with 11 on the Polytrack and four on the turf course in races, and five on the Polytrack and one on the dirt training track during training hours for a total of 21.

Last year, when the Polytrack made its debut, there were 12 fatalities on the Polytrack and two on the turf in races, and three on the Polytrack in training for a total of 17.

There were 22 fatalities on the main dirt track in 2006 but only eight in 2005.

Frank Calabrese was the leading owner for the ninth straight year with 69 victories, and defending champion Wayne Catalano was the leading trainer for the seventh time in nine years with 62 wins.

Defending champion Rene Douglas earned champion jockey honors for the sixth time in eight years with 136 wins.
