Circular Quay retired, to stand in Florida

Circular Quay, a Grade 1 winner at two and Grade 2 winner at three and four, has been retired for stud duty in 2009 at Brent and Crystal Fernung’s Journeyman Stud in Reddick, Florida.

No stud fee has been announced for the four-year-old Thunder Gulch colt out of Grade 1 winner Circle of Life, by Belong to Me.

Trained by Todd Pletcher for Michael and Doreen Tabor, Circular Quay won the 2006 Hopeful Stakes (G1) and finished second in the Lane’s End Breeders’ Cup Futurity (G1) and Bessemer Trust Breeders’ Cup Juvenile (G1). He scored in the 2007 Louisiana Derby (G2) and successfully returned to Fair Grounds with a victory in the ’08 New Orleans Handicap (G2).

“Circular Quay is the entire package,” Brent Fernung said. “He is by a champion sire out of a Grade 1 winner, and [he] was a spectacular two-year-old. He fits Florida perfectly and helps to fill a spot in the Florida market that has been recently depleted.”

Circular Quay finished fourth in the Oaklawn Handicap (G2) in his final start on April 5. He won five of 13 career starts and earned $1,505,434.
