Weather a hot topic among horsemen

Hot weather and nearby wildfires have become ubiquitous with the Breeders’ Cup World Championships at Santa Anita Park, as 90-degree weather and wildfires burning in the Los Angeles area mirrored conditions from 2003 when the Breeders’ Cup last visited the Arcadia, California, facility.

The hot weather is of particular concern to European-based horses who have only had a short time to acclimate to the steep temperature increases.

Aidan O’Brien, who will saddle six horses over the Breeders’ Cup’s two days and 14 races, said Wednesday after his sextet visited the track for the first time that the weather will be an adjustment for his charges but that he would not use it as an excuse for a poor performance.

The similar weather in 2003 concerned several European trainers, including Pascal Bary, who saddled Six Perfections (Fr) to victory in the NetJets Breeders’ Cup Mile (G1) that year but said after the race that he would be hesitant to ship his horses into similar conditions in the future.

Still, despite the concerns, European-based horses that year won all three turf events, and the strong international contingent this year is highly regarded, including three European-based horses expected to go in the $5-million Breeders’ Cup Classic (G1).

John Gosden, who trains Raven’s Pass for Princess Haya of Jordan, echoed O’Brien’s statements that the temperature is not ideal but that he did not expect it to impact his horse’s performance in the Classic.

The high on Friday is expected to reach 93 degrees with temperatures expected to be in the mid 70s for first post. Saturday will be slightly cooler with low 70s in the late morning and a high of 90 by the afternoon.
