Indescribable steadily reeled in runner-up Leah’s Secret and took the lead in the closing strides to win the $150,000 Arlington Matron Handicap (G3) on Monday at Arlington Park.
Courtlandt Farm’s homebred Pleasant Tap filly earned her first graded stakes win with a half-length triumph. She covered 1 1/8 miles on Arlington’s synthetic Polytrack surface in 1:49.82 after finishing a close third in the Doubledogdare Stakes (G3) on the Polytrack surface at Keeneland Race Course on April 18 in her previous start.
Tessa Blue, the 2-to-1 favorite, broke sharply from the outside and set a leisurely pace through a half-mile in :49.47 while Indescribable stalked from fifth under Jeremy Rose before advancing to third, 1 ½ lengths behind through six furlongs in 1:13.13.
Indescribable was caught in traffic on the final turn while Leah’s Secret advanced from the rail, overtook Tessa Blue, and opened a two-length lead in the stretch. Once clear, Indescribable rallied three wide and gamely wore down Leah’s Secret for victory.
“My filly jumped into the bit at the eighth pole and I knew from there we’d get [Leah’s Secret],” Rose said. “Everything set up like I thought it would. She beat a couple of real nice horses in there.”
Winless in her first six career starts, Indescribable blossomed in the second half of her juvenile season when racing exclusively on synthetic surfaces, winning three straight races to cap off the year for trainer Graham Motion.
“She’s like night and day on Polytrack [versus dirt],” Motion said. “We had to start her on the dirt, but I knew she’d be a nice filly on [Polytrack]. I didn’t realize just how much she’d turn around on Polytrack.”
Leah’s Secret was seven lengths clear of third-place finisher Lady Carlock.
Indescribable, who is out of multiple stakes winner Catnip, by Flying Paster, won her first race in three starts this year and improved her overall record to four wins in 12 starts while earning $219,802.
