Track conditions fast at Churchill

The rain that fell on Churchill Downs throughout Kentucky Oaks (G1) day and through the evening stopped at about 9 a.m. Saturday morning, and track officials upgraded the main track condition to fast as of 1:30 p.m. EDT, just in time for the 134th Kentucky Derby (G1) at 6:04 p.m. EDT.

A combination of weather and an on-going dispute with horsemen led to decreased business on Oaks day, as attendance dropped to its lowest figure since 2004, and total handle declined 6.97% to $31,231,991.

Saturday’s weather should not impact attendance, but a decreased set of options to wager on the 12-race Derby card most likely will hurt handle. Only the Woodford Reserve Turf Classic Stakes (G1) and the Derby will be available on advance deposit wagering platforms, and none of the card is available at Calder Race Course, which Churchill Downs Inc owns.

There are 13 scratches on the day but none in the Derby and only one among the Grade 1 races: War Monger scratched out of the Woodford Reserve Turf Classic Stakes (G1).
