Coa takes off weekend mounts after suffering rib injury

Jockey Eibar Coa, who led the Belmont Park rider standings with 48 wins through Friday, took off his mounts this weekend after suffering a bruised rib in a racing accident at Belmont.

Coa was hurt after being unseated by Storm Caller, who stumbled badly at the start of the $75,400 Yankee Victor Stakes on Friday. Agent Matt Muzikar expects Coa to resume riding on Wednesday at Belmont.

“It slowed us down a little bit. But hopefully, it’s just a minor bump in the road,” Muzikar said. “It could have been worse. We can thank God that it hasn’t been.”

Coa was transported to the hospital after being hurt, and was X-rayed and released. Muzikar said Coa is “just a little uncomfortable."

“He’s just going to let things cool down a little bit and let the soreness go away,” Muzikar said. “Then he’s going to get back to things as normal.”

Coa was scheduled to ride in three stakes races on Saturday at Colonial Downs. He was also scheduled to ride Jungle Brew on Sunday at Woodbine in the Queen’s Plate Stakes, the first leg of the Canadian Triple Crown.

Jockey Jim McAleney will replace Coa aboard Jungle Brew. McAleney leads the Woodbine rider standings with 35 wins through Friday.
