Tizdejavu makes all the pace to win American Derby

Michael Cooper’s and Pamela Ziebarth’s homebred Tizdejavu was never seriously challenged on Saturday as the three-year-old Tiznow colt went wire to wire to win the $250,000 American Derby (G2) at Arlington Park.

Tizdejavu, the 7-to-10 favorite, and jockey Rene Douglas laid down a moderate tempo of :51.93 for the half-mile, leaving Douglas with plenty of horse to complete the journey in 1:59.88 on the soft turf course.

It was 2 1/4 lengths back to second-place finisher Sr. Henry, who was 2 1/4 lengths clear of Ablaze With Spirit.

Unraced at two, Tizdejavu was never off the board in his first four starts on synthetic surfaces at Turfway Park and Keeneland Race Course but has turned into a winning machine since trainer Gregory Fox switched him to turf. The bay colt remains undefeated in three starts on turf, all in graded stakes.

Tizdejavu won the Crown Royal American Turf (G3) and the Jefferson Cup (G2) Stakes at Churchill Downs before making the trip to Arlington and boosting his record to four wins from seven starts and earnings of $419,687.
