Golden Spikes rallied from fourth and took the lead nearing the wire to win the $250,000 Carry Back Stakes (G2) by three-quarters of a length on Saturday at Calder Race Course, securing his first career graded stakes win.
The Seeking the Gold colt stalked the pace from fourth before being steadied entering the turn to avoid running up on the leaders. Jockey Elvis Trujillo then angled his mount to the outside and rallied him in deep stretch to win the six-furlong race in 1:11.20 on a track rated as fast.
“With this horse, the later you move, the better he finishes,” Trujillo said. “He is a very nice horse and six furlongs is perfect for him.”
Trained by Martin Wolfson for owners M375 Thoroughbreds, Inc. and Suarez Racing Stable, Golden Spikes improved to four wins in ten starts and increased his earnings to $372,095.
Bred in Kentucky by R. S. Evans, Golden Spikes is out of winning A.P. Indy mare A. P. Interest.
Wolfson said he plans to point Golden Spikes toward the King’s Bishop Stakes (G1) on August 23 at Saratoga Race Course.
