Communique wore down pacesetter Royal Leah and runner-up Kiss With a Twist in the stretch and drew away to win the $150,000 Modesty Handicap (G3) by 3 3/4 lengths on Saturday at Arlington Park.
The four-year-old Smart Strike filly, who scored her second graded stakes win of 2008, settled in ninth place on the rail in the early stages, about seven lengths off Royal Leah.
Swinging out wide for the stretch drive, Communique overhauled Royal Leah and Kiss With a Twist and was clear late under jockey Rene Douglas, winning the 1 3/16-mile race in 1:58.89 on turf rated as soft.
Trained by Rusty Arnold for owner-breeder G. Watts Humphrey Jr., Communique improved her record to four wins in 15 starts and increased her earnings of $352,134.
Communique’s first graded victory of the year came in the Grey Goose Bewitch Stakes (G3) at Keeneland Race Course on April 24.
Kentucky-bred Communique is out of the Pleasant Colony mare Martinique.
