Slew’s Tiznow, the Lane’s End Breeders’ Futurity (G1) runner-up last fall, will not be a candidate for the Kentucky Derby Presented by Yum! Brands (G1) after undergoing colic surgery in mid-January.
Trainer Greg Fox said Slew’s Tiznow is recovering at his farm in Lexington, but the Tiznow colt will be out of training for around three months. J. Brett Woodie, D.V.M., performed the surgery at Rood and Riddle Equine Hospital in Lexington.
“Basically the large intestine flipped over and couldn’t flip back,” said Fox, a former racetrack veterinarian. “He wasn’t in terrible shape when they did it, but it wasn’t going to get better on its own, unfortunately. He’s back with me—he arrived about four days ago—and he’s actually doing very well.”
The colic bout was the most serious in a series of issues since Slew’s Tiznow finished second by 3 1/4 lengths to Wicked Style in the Breeders’ Futurity on October 6 at Keeneland Race Course for trainer Patrick Biancone.
Slew’s Tiznow developed a temperature that forced him to be scratched from the Bessemer Trust Breeders’ Cup Juvenile (G1) on October 27 at Monmouth Park. He was transferred to Fox when Biancone began serving a one-year suspension on November 1.
Fox abandoned plans to start Slew’s Tiznow in the Kentucky Jockey Club Stakes (G2) on November 24 at Churchill Downs when the colt’s red blood cell count dropped. Slew’s Tiznow recovered and Fox shipped him to Hollywood Park for the CashCall Futurity (G1) on December 21, only to have to scratch him again due to illness.
“The horse has had several events in a row that show he needed a break,” Fox said. “He’s still a very promising horse, just not a Derby contender.”
Fox trains Slew’s Tiznow and his four-year-old full brother, multiple graded stakes winner Slew’s Tizzy, for owner Joseph LaCombe.
Slew’s Tizzy, winner of the Coolmore Lexington Stakes (G2) and Lone Star Derby (G3) last spring, is slated for the Strub Stakes (G2) on Saturday at Santa Anita Park.
