Graded stakes-placed winners Silver Edition and St. Joe are among seven three-year-olds that will try to join the Triple Crown trail by earning their first career stakes victory in the $150,000 Swale Stakes (G2) on Saturday at Gulfstream Park.
Racing Hall of Fame member D. Wayne Lukas trains Silver Edition, a runner-up in the Hutcheson Stakes (G2) in his previous start on January 5 at Gulfstream. The Silver Deputy colt posted a half-length debut win in a maiden special weight race on September 7 at Belmont Park, and also finished second in a six-furlong allowance race on October 28 at Churchill Downs.
St. Joe finished third in the Iroquois Stakes (G3) on October 28 at Churchill. The Trippi colt enters off an unplaced finish in the Boyd Gaming’s Delta Jackpot Stakes (G3) on December 27 at Delta Downs for trainer Darrin Miller and Tommy and Bonnie Hamilton’s Silverton Hill.
The field for the 6 1/2-furlong Swale also includes stakes-placed winners Surrealdeal and Coal Play. Trainer Kiaran McLaughlin entered Wincat, a 6 3/4-length debut winner of a maiden special weight race on December 28 at Philadelphia Park.
Chester Bishop’s Surrealdeal enters off a third-place finish in the Pasco Stakes on January 19 at Tampa Bay Downs. The Awesome Again colt placed in three stakes last season for trainer Tom Schell, posting runner-up finishes at Calder Race Course in the Criterium Stakes on July 7 and the Birdonthewire Stakes on October 13.
Coal Play, who like 2007 champion two-year-old male War Pass is trained by Nick Zito and owned by Robert LaPenta, closed his juvenile campaign with a runner-up finish in the What a Pleasure Stakes on December 1 at Calder. The Mineshaft colt enters off an unplaced finish in the Hutcheson.
