Laurel Park to adjust live racing schedule

A request by the Maryland Jockey Club to alter Laurel Park’s live schedule in hopes of increasing on-track mutuel handle was approved on Tuesday by the Maryland Racing Commission.

Live racing at the Laurel, Maryland, track currently is being conducted Wednesday through Saturday. Beginning February 28, racing will be run on a Thursday-through-Sunday schedule for the remainder of the 15-week meeting, which concludes April 13.

The meet previously was scheduled to conclude April 12.

“We saw a decline in the on-track handle last year and it has continued during the first four weeks of the new year, so we decided to try something new,” said Chris Dragone, Maryland Jockey Club president and general manager. “I believe we can get more fans out to the track on a Sunday versus a work day. That is the whole method behind the decision.”

Live racing will not be held on Easter Sunday on March 23. The date will be made up during Pimlico Race Course’s spring meeting, which begins April 17.
