Reporting for Duty closed his 2007 campaign with his first career stakes victory and began his four-year-old season with another convincing stakes win.

The Deputy Commander colt seized command inside the eighth pole and accelerated clear to prevail by 4¾ lengths on Saturday in the $100,000 MAXXAM Gold Cup Handicap, Sam Houston Race Park’s signature event.

Trained by Steve Asmussen for Cathy and Rob Zollars, Reporting for Duty finished on the board in six of his first seven starts last year, including a runner-up finish in the Illinois Derby (G2) and a third-place finish in the Ohio Derby (G2). Reporting for Duty broke through with a 4 1/2-length score in the Zia Park Derby on December 8 in his 2007 season finale.

Reporting for Duty dropped more than 11 lengths off the pace in the MAXXAM Gold Cup as Goosey Moose and 4-to-5 favorite Honest Man dueled through an opening quarter in :24.25 and a half-mile in :48.04. Reporting for Duty launched his winning bid on the far turn and made up more than ten lengths in the final three-eighths of a mile.

Sent off as the 2.20-to-1 second choice as part of a coupled entry with stablemate Red Rock Creek, Reporting for Duty completed 1 1/8 miles in 1:52.33 on a track rated as good.

Runner-up Red Rock Creek closed willingly from last to finish two lengths clear of third-place finisher Goosey Moose. Honest Man faded to fifth.

Reporting for Duty improved to three wins in 14 starts and boosted his earnings to $366,846. Bred in Kentucky by McMillin Brothers and James Devaney, Reporting for Duty is out of stakes-placed winner Expanse, by Distant View.
