Santa Anita Park canceled live racing for the second straight day on Friday because of drainage problems with the track’s newly installed Cushion Track surface.

A decision will be made on Saturday at 10 a.m. PST on whether to conduct racing at Santa Anita.

Live racing also was canceled on Thursday after a combination of rain and hail pelted the Arcadia, California, area. Drainage problems also forced Santa Anita to cancel live racing from January 5-7.

Santa Anita and Gulfstream Park on Saturday are scheduled to hold the Sunshine Millions, a series of eight races for Florida- and California-breds that feature a combined purse value of $3.6-million.

“Obviously, we are hoping to get a break in this weather pattern and we’re concerned about being able to run our Sunshine Millions races here on Saturday,” Santa Anita President Ron Charles said. “We will assess the condition of the track on a day-to-day basis, and we’re just hoping conditions will improve to the extent that we’ll be able to run.”

There is a 20% chance of rain in the Arcadia area on Friday night, according to weather.com. Saturday’s forecast also includes a chance of rain during the day, with a high temperature of 65 degrees and east-southeast winds blowing up to 10 miles per hour.

On Saturday night, there is a 100% chance for rain.
