War Pass set for first start of year on Sunday

War Pass, the undefeated two-year-old male, will return in a one-mile allowance event on Sunday, one race after the Fountain of Youth Stakes (G2).

The Cherokee Run colt will be an overwhelming favorite in the field of six for the tenth race, scheduled for 5:44 p.m. EST.

Trained by Nick Zito for owner Robert LaPenta, War Pass has not raced since his 4 3/4-length victory in the Bessemer Trust Breeders’ Cup Juvenile (G1) over the sloppy track at Monmouth Park on October 27. His workout line shows five published drills since he returned to serious training on January 10.

Most recently, War Pass covered six furlongs in 1:13.20 on February 16 at Palm Meadows Training Center. He is tentatively scheduled to use Sunday’s start as a prep for the Tampa Bay Derby (G3) on March 15 and Wood Memorial Stakes (G1) on April 5 at Aqueduct.

Zito and LaPenta also entered Web Gem, a maiden winner who finished fourth in an entry-level allowance race on January 30. Sunday’s race is an open allowance for three-year-olds.

The rest of the field consists of Jet Run, who finished fifth in a $62,500 claiming race on January 28; Chadwell, the last-place finisher in an allowance race on January 24; Ultimate Authority, third in a turf sprint allowance on January 31; and Dylan’s Choice, winner of a $8,000 claiming maiden claiming race on January 26 at Tampa Bay Downs.
