Nashoba’s Key California-bred horse of the year

Nashoba’s Key was named 2007 California-bred horse of the year at the California Thoroughbred Breeders Association’s annual meeting and awards dinner on Monday at the Langham Huntington Hotel and Spa in Pasadena, California.
Warren Williamson’s homebred Silver Hawk mare, who won seven of eight starts last season, also was named champion older female and champion turf horse.
Nashoba’s Key’s seven wins all came in California. She won five stakes races during her first year of racing as a four-year-old, including victories in the Yellow Ribbon Stakes (G1) and Vanity Invitational Handicap (G1). She earned $972,090. In her only start outside of California, she finished fourth to Lahudood (GB) in the Emirates Airline Breeders’ Cup Filly and Mare Turf (G1) at Monmouth Park.
Ancient Title Stakes (G1) winner Idiot Proof was named champion three-year-old male and champion sprinter. A Marty and Pam Wygod homebred, the Benchmark colt secured four wins in eight starts and earned $803,136 last year. He concluded the season with a runner-up finish to Midnight Lute in the TVG Breeders’ Cup Sprint (G1).
George Schwary’s hombred Georgie Boy, winner of the Del Mar Futurity (G1), was named champion two-year-old male. Spring Awakening, owned by breeder Gerald Frankel as well as Robert Strauss and Michael Cain, was honored as champion two-year-old filly.
STD Racing Stable’s and Jason Wood’s Lave Man won the Santa Anita Handicap (G1) and Hollywood Gold Cup Stakes (G1) in 2007 and was named champion older male.
Also at the dinner, breeder John Harris, trainer Mel Stute, jockey Russell Baze, and champions Flying Paster and Decidedly were inducted into the California Thoroughbred Breeders Association hall of fame.
