Not even a frightening spill that knocked out several front teeth can slow down Eclipse Award-winning jockey Garrett Gomez, who continued his pursuit of Jerry Bailey’s single-season North American earnings record with two wins on Monday at Santa Anita Park.

Gomez was unseated on Saturday at Santa Anita when pacesetter Back At You ducked into the rail in the stretch and fell in the Eddie Logan Stakes. Gomez was taken to Methodist Hospital in Arcadia, California, for evaluation and was later released. Gomez’s agent, Ron Anderson, said the jockey lost three front teeth in the spill.

Gomez missed a scheduled start aboard Bsharpsonata in the La Brea Stakes (G1) and took off his scheduled mounts on Sunday, but he got right back on track with his first mount on Monday.

Gomez was forced to steady Suit Yourself in the third race at Santa Anita, but he angled the Tribal Rule gelding wide approaching the stretch. Suit Yourself closed with a rush to post a clear win as the 2.60-to-1 favorite in the 6 1/2-furlong claiming race.

Gomez added a victory aboard Trainspotting in the fifth race and picked up $29,560 in purse earnings from his four mounts. His final scheduled mount, We Will Rock You (Ire), was scratched from the seventh race.

Gomez has amassed $23,275,879 in North American purse earnings this season and moved within $79,081 of Bailey’s record of $23,354,960 in 2003.
