Jockey Donnie Meche hurt at Fair Grounds

Jockey Donnie Meche was taken to Tulane Medical Center in New Orleans after being thrown from his mount during the first race at Fair Grounds on Sunday.

Meche was riding three-year-old filly Miss San Lilli in third when he was unseated near the three-sixteenths pole. Meche fell to the ground and may have been kicked by a trailing horse.

Miss San Lilli, a maiden Glitterman filly trained by Corale Richards and owned by Melvin Guerra Jr., suffered multiple fractures to her right front ankle and was euthanized.

Meche, a 34-year-old native of Rayne, Louisiana, was conscious after the spill but was placed on a stretcher and taken to the hospital.

A 15-year riding veteran, Meche has won 1,563 races from 11,507 mounts through Friday.
