Flashmans Papers (GB) surged to the lead in early stretch, opened a clear advantage under Rafael Bejarano, and dug in gamely to turn back game runner-up Kelly Leak in the $78,070 Eddie Logan Stakes on Saturday at Santa Anita Park.
A stakes winner at Royal Ascot this year, the Exceed And Excel colt completed one mile in 1:36.61 on turf rated as good. Trained by Doug O’Neill for owner Dennis O’Neill, Flashmans Papers improved to three wins in 11 career starts and boosted his earnings to $150,180.
Pacesetter Back At You ducked into the rail in the stretch and fell, unseating jockey Garrett Gomez.
Back At You, a Stormy Atlantic colt trained by Eddie Truman, was vanned off the track after the race. Santa Anita officials said he got up and walked to the van after the fall.
Gomez, who was slated to ride Bsharpsonata in the La Brea Stakes (G1) in the following race, was taken to Methodist Hospital in Arcadia, California, for evaluation and later released.
Gomez’s agent, Ron Anderson, said the jockey lost three front teeth in the spill. Gomez has a sore hand and a gash on his left knee. Anderson said he did not know how long Gomez would be sidelined.
Kelly Leak, who finished first in the Best Pal Stakes (G2) in August at Del Mar but was disqualified and placed fourth, finished second as the 1.70-to-1 favorite. Congor Bay finished another 1 1/4 lengths back in third.
Flashmans Papers is out of the winning Lion Cavern mare Franglais, a half sister to Grade 1 winner Fraulein (GB).
