Jalil finishes third in U.S. debut

Godolphin Racing’s Jalil broke slowly and never recovered en route to a third-place finish behind three-time Canadian champion Judiths Wild Rush in the $50,000 Waquoit Stakes on Saturday at Suffolk Downs.

Jalil never threatened in his United States debut as Judiths Wild Rush beat runner-up Riversrunrylee by three-quarters of a length for his first win since January 2007.

Jalil finished third, 4 3/4 lengths behind the winner.

Jalil trailed the six-horse field as Riversrunrylee led through a quarter-mile in :23.64 and a half-mile in :47.26.

Judiths Wild Rush made a three-wide move in early stretch and surged past Riversrunrylee for the win. Jalil made a three-wide move on the far turn but could not challenge the leaders when urged by jockey Rajiv Maragh.

Jalil was purchased by Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid al Maktoum for $9.7-million at the 2005 Keeneland September yearling sale.

The four-year-old Storm Cat colt, whose victory on March 6 in the Sakhee al Maktoum Challenge-Round 3 (UAE-G2) capped a three-race win streak, finished seventh in the Emirates Airline Dubai World Cup (UAE-G1) in his previous start on March 29 at Nad al Sheba Racecourse.
