Laurel Park to hold 23 stakes races during fall meeting

Laurel Park will conduct 23 stakes races during its fall meeting after its stakes schedule was approved on Tuesday by the Maryland Racing Commission.

All of the races will be for either Maryland-bred or Maryland-sired horses. Earlier this month, the Maryland Jockey Club and Maryland Thoroughbred Horsemen’s Association agreed to cancel all open stakes races for Laurel’s fall meeting due to a purse shortfall.

“Eliminating graded stakes races is deeply troubling but this is the realty of our business in the current state,” Maryland Jockey Club President Tom Chuckas said. “We are hoping the slot machine referendum going before voters November 4 will pass, which will level the playing field between Maryland and the tracks in Delaware, West Virginia, and Pennsylvania.”

Among the races canceled were the Frank J. De Francis Memorial Dash (G1), the Safely Kept Stakes (G3), the Laurel Futurity, and the Selima Stakes.

Twelve of the stakes places will take place on Maryland Million Day on October 4. The most lucrative race will be the $300,000 Maryland Million Classic Stakes for offspring of Maryland-based stallions ages three and older.

The 65-day fall meeting will begin on September 4. Live racing will be conducted Wednesday through Saturday, except for Columbus Day, through December 27.
