Injury knocks Sudan from Arlington Million

A disappointed Bobby Frankel scratched Gary Tanaka’s Grade 3 winner Sudan (Ire) from the Arlington Million Stakes (G1) on Friday after the five-year-old Peintre Celebre horse was found to have a bowed tendon.

“He’s out. He’s injured,” the Racing Hall of Fame trainer said.

Francoise Dupuis, racing manager for Tanaka, said Sudan was fine on Thursday, but his connections noticed a problem on Friday morning. They took a nuclear scan of the swollen tendon and made the call to Frankel, who was at Saratoga Race Course.

“It’s horrible,” Dupuis said. “Mr. Tanaka is on the plane coming here right now. It’s very sad to have to tell the owner as he lands that instead of running, his horse has an injury.”

Sudan, winner of the Golden Gate Fields Turf Handicap (G3), was fourth behind Red Rocks (Ire) and Curlin in the Man o’ War Stakes (G1) on July 12 in his previous start. He has three wins with two second- and four-third-place finishes from 16 starts for earnings of $476,323.
