Rahy’s Attorney stole the spotlight from multiple Grade 1 winner Kip Deville as he launched his winning bid on the turn and was fully extended to win the $1,013,938 Woodbine Mile Stakes (Can-G1) on Sunday at Woodbine.
Rahy’s Attorney earned his first Grade 1 win by completing one mile in 1:36.14 on turf rated as yielding under Slade Callaghan at odds of 12.65-to-1. Ellie Boje Farm’s homebred Crown Attorney gelding finished 1¼ lengths ahead of runner-up Ventura, who was 1¾ lengths clear of third-place finisher Just Rushing.
In addition to securing a Grade 1 win, Rahy’s Attorney sealed a starting spot in the $2-million Breeders Cup Mile (G1) on October 25 at the Oak Tree meeting at Santa Anita Park. The Woodbine Mile is part of the Breeders’ Cup Challenge “Win and You’re In” series.
Rahy’s Attorney, Ice Bear, and Kip Deville raced within two lengths of pacesetter Just Rushing through a quarter-mile in :24.47 and stakes winner Mulmur joined the fray through a half-mile in :48.25.
Entering the far turn, Callaghan moved Rahy’s Attorney to the outside of Just Rushing and he took the lead with 2007 NetJets Breeders’ Cup Mile (G1) winner Kip Deville 1½ lengths behind in second at the quarter pole.
Kip Deville flattened out in the stretch as Rahy’s Attorney surged clear.
Just a Game Stakes (G1) winner and 2.70-to-1 second choice Ventura launched a closing rush from three wide but she was unable to catch Rahy’s Attorney.
Trainer Richard Dutrow Jr.’s Kip Deville finished fifth as the 1-to-2 favorite.
Trained by Ian Black, Rahy’s Attorney improved to seven wins in 17 career starts, all at Woodbine, and increased his earnings to $1,084,234. He won the Connaught Cup Stakes (Can-G3) on May 25.
