Prix du Moulin de Longchamp (Fr-G1) winner Goldikova will compete in the Breeders’ Cup Mile (G1) rather than the Emirates Airline Breeders’ Cup Filly and Mare Turf (G1).
The French-based Anabaa filly would be Freddie Head’s first Breeders’ Cup starter as a trainer. During a long and successful career as a jockey, Head won consecutive editions of the Mile aboard Miesque in 1987 and ’88.
Goldikova defeated males in the Prix du Moulin de Longchamp on September 7 after scoring her first Group 1 victory in the Prix Rothschild (Fr-G1) on August 3 at Deauville.
“The Mile is her best chance,” Head said in Racing Post.
The Filly and Mare Turf could lose another top candidate if Qatar Petroleum Prix de l’Opera (Fr-G1) winner Lady Marian does not make the trip.
Alastair Donald of the International Racing Bureau said the German-bred filly’s status is uncertain. Her connections were not immediately available on Tuesday.
The Prix de l’Opera victory on October 5 was Lady Marian’s second straight group win at the Filly and Mare Turf’s distance of 1 1/4 miles.
