Tanganyika gives trainer Klesaris win 1,000

Trainer Steve Klesaris earned his 1,000th career win on Saturday as Tanganyika drew off to a dominant 14-length romp in the first race at Delaware Park.

Tanganyika pressured pacesetter Sir Oz, took over near the quarter pole, and drew off to decisive victory in the maiden claiming race.

Klesaris, 48, currently is enjoying one of his most successful years as a trainer due in large part to a pair of talented juveniles.

Klesaris won the second Grade 1 race of his career as two-year-old Sky Diva captured the Frizette Stakes (G1) on Saturday.

He won his first Grade 1 on August 31 as talented juvenile Mani Bhavan took the Spinaway Stakes (G1) at Saratoga Race Course. Mani Bhavan also won the Adirondack Stakes (G2) in August at Saratoga.

Originally from Boston and now living in Lincoln University, Pennsylvania, Klesaris hails from a family of horsemen. His father, Peter, and older brother, Robert, are both trainers. The trio all won races during the same card on September 26, 2005, at Delaware Park.

In addition to training, Steve Klesaris worked as an agent for jockeys Richard Migliore and Herb McCauley for about 18 months.

Klesaris mainly works in the Mid-Atlantic region and moves much of his stable to Florida for the winter.
