The frequently fluctuating list of horses likely to contest the 133rd Preakness Stakes (G1) gained one contender and lost another on Monday.
Cubanacan Stables’ Arkansas Derby (G2) winner Gayego was a surprise late addition while undefeated Harlem Rocker will not contest the Preakness on Saturday.
Trainer Paulo Lobo initially said Gayego would not be pointed to either of the final two legs of the Triple Crown after the Gilded Time colt finished 17th in the Kentucky Derby Presented by Yum! Brands (G1) on May 3. Lobo said Gayego lost any chance in the Derby when he missed the break, was squeezed back, and clipped heels in the early stages of the race.
“That’s the reason we are thinking about [the Preakness],” Lobo said about Gayego never really getting into the race in the Derby. “He’s very happy right now and he came back very sound.
“I’m going to decide [Tuesday],” Lobo said from Southern Califiornia. “We are going to have a meeting. I’m going to track him in the morning, then we’ll make a decision.”
Withers Stakes (G3) winner Harlem Rocker will be pointed to the $1-million Queen’s Plate Stakes, the first jewel of the Canadian Triple Crown, on June 22 at Woodbine. An Adena Springs homebred by Adena second-crop sire Macho Uno, owner Frank Stronach made the final decision to skip the Preakness.
“I spoke to Mr. Stronach this morning and we’ve decided to take a conservative approach,” trainer Todd Pletcher said. “We’re going to point toward the Queen’s Plate and we’ll look for some bigger races down the road.”
Unbeaten Kentucky Derby Presented by Yum! Brands (G1) winner Big Brown jogged a mile on the main track on Monday at Churchill Downs. Trainer Richard Dutrow Jr. planned to gallop the Boundary colt, but decided to jog Big Brown on the sealed, muddy track.
“He’d rather do more, but he’s still okay with this,” Dutrow said. “Hopefully, we can gallop tomorrow. If not, we’ll jog him again. I only gallop my horses when the track is good. When it’s sealed like that, I never gallop anything. So, if the track’s good tomorrow we’ll gallop him. If not, we’ll jog him. It’s not a big deal. Hopefully, we can do the same thing Wednesday and then get out of here.”
Big Brown is scheduled to be shipped from Louisville to Baltimore on Wednesday.
Todd Pletcher was pleased with Coolomore Lexington Stakes (G2) winner Behindatthebar’s final workout for the Preakness and the trainer said he came out of the drill in good order. The Forest Wildcat colt breezed five furlongs in 1:00.13 on Sunday on the training track at Belmont Park.
“I thought he worked well,” Pletcher said. “It’s the first time we’ve worked him on a traditional dirt track, and he seemed to handle it real well. He came out of it well, so he’s ready to go.”
Arkansas Derby third-place finisher Tres Borrachos galloped 1 5/8 miles on Monday at Churchill without blinkers, one day after trainer Beau Greeley added the equipment for the Ecton Park gelding’s morning exercise.
“It was just an experiment we thought we’d try,” Greely said. “It looked like it didn’t make any difference, plus he has shown speed in his races and I didn’t want to take a chance.”
