Kobiskie earns first victory as a trainer at Laurel

Former jockey Dane Kobiskie earned his first career victory as a trainer when Yacht Man powered to a 6 1/4-length victory in the ninth race on Sunday at Laurel Park.

The Regal American gelding stalked the pace under jockey Malcolm Franklin, seized command in early stretch, and surged clear to secure the milestone win for Kobiskie, who has a string of about 25 horses based at Bowie Training Center.

A 29-year-old native of Witchita, Kansas, Kobiskie served in the Marine Corp. after attending college in Florida.

After an internship at Taylor Made Farm in Nicholasville, Kentucky, Kobiskie galloped horses for trainers Dallas Stewart, John Ward, and Todd Pletcher. He was an assistant to trainers Michael Pino and Steve Asmussen before he started riding professionally.

Kobiskie rode 288 winners from 1,902 starters that earned $5,343,079. He won five stakes races and earned his first career stakes win aboard Dreaming of Anna in the 2006 Tippett Stakes at Colonial Downs.
