Breeders’ Cup adds four races to Challenge

Breeders’ Cup Ltd. has added four races to the Challenge series offering automatic qualification for the World Championships program.

The additions include three 1 1/2-mile races—the $250,000 Greenwood Cup on July 19 at Philadelphia Park, $150,000 Cougar II Handicap on July 30 at Del Mar, and $100,000 Turfway Park Fall Championship Stakes (G3) on September 6—that will serve as preps for the new Breeders’ Cup Marathon.

The Turfway Park Fall Championship previously was conducted at one mile.

“We applaud the Breeders’ Cup leadership for adding a high-profile race that rewards horses bred for stamina, and we look forward to adding to the list of Breeders’ Cup winners that prepped at Turfway Park,” said Bob Elliston, Turfway’s president.

The other new race in the Challenge series is the $150,000 Tiznow Stakes at one mile on September 20 at Louisiana Downs, which will offer an automatic berth to the Breeders’ Cup Dirt Mile.

The additions push the Challenge to 57 races, an increase from 24 last year when the series was inaugurated.
