Trainer Foley reaches 1,000-win plateau
Trainer Greg Foley earned his milestone 1,000th win on Wednesday at Turfway Park when Cherokee Nation scored a front-running, nine-length victory in the ninth race.
The four-year-old Cherokee Run gelding, owned by Foley and breeder Clarkland Farm, led by two lengths though a half-mile :48.10 and increased his advantage to win the 1 1/16-mile maiden claiming race.
Foley has saddled 5,681 runners that have amassed purse earnings of $15,517,732 through Wednesday.
The 50-year-old Somerset, Kentucky, native, began training in 1981 and holds five individual meet training titles at Turfway. In 2005 and ’06, he led all Turfway trainers in number of wins across the track’s three meets for the year. Foley also has earned training titles at Ellis Park and Churchill Downs.
Foley’s 61 stakes winner include three-time Grade 3 winner Champali, whom he said is the best horse he ever trained.
Foley began his career working with his father, longtime Kentucky horseman Dravo Foley. His sister, Vickie, also is a trainer.
