Trainer McBride saddles 1,000th career winner

Trainer Barbara McBride earned her 1,000th career victory when Ashley and I posted a half-length win in the fifth race on Saturday at Tampa Bay Downs.

McBride closed within one victory of the milestone when Knockmanagh won Saturday’s third race at the Oldsmar, Florida, track.

A native of Redford Township, Michigan, McBride began her career training Standardbreds, then switched to Thoroughbreds in 1994. The 58-year-old McBride is a regular competitor on the Florida, Indiana, and Kentucky circuits, and has compiled $9,029,510 in Thoroughbred purse earnings through Saturday.

Thoroughbreds trained by McBride have made 5,341 starts, and have also earned 803 runner-up and 714 third-place finishes.

McBride has posted seven of her wins in stakes races. She earned her most lucrative victory saddline Udrivemehome to a win in the $100,000 Cleveland Gold Cup Handicap at Thistledown in 1997.
