Indian Blessing's next start undecided
by Phil Janack
Champion filly Indian Blessing turned in an impressive five-furlong breeze on Sunday morning at Saratoga Race Course.
The runaway winner of the Test Stakes (G1) in her last start on August 2, Indian Blessing covered the distance in :59.84 under exercise rider Simon Harris on the main track.
Like several other horses trained by California-based Bob Baffert, Indian Blessing stays in New York with former assistant Tonja Terranova and her husband, trainer John Terranova.
"She's doing really good," Tonja Terranova said. "Talking to Bob [Baffert on Saturday] night, he wanted her to have a good, steady five [furlongs] and go out three-quarters and seven-eighths, and that's what she did.
"She's just been like a machine since she's gotten up here. She's holding her weight well and she has just been training tremendously."
The workout was the second for Indian Blessing since winning the seven-furlong Test by seven lengths. She breezed a half-mile in:47.98 on August 18 in her first workout after the Test.
"All signs are that she's doing great," Terranova said. "We gave her a nice, easy two weeks after the Test and worked her back last week just nice and steady. She's really at the top of her game right now."
Indian Blessing will have one more workout in Saratoga before she is shipped back to Belmont Park for the fall meet, which opens September 5.
The 2007 Eclipse Award winner as champion two-year-old filly, Indian Blessing is being considered for both the $300,000 Ruffian Handicap (G1) against older horses at 1 1/16 miles on September 6 and the $250,000 Gazelle Stakes (G1) against three-year-old fillies at 1 1/8 miles on September 13.
"It's still up in the air," Terranova said. "[Baffert is] pretty much going by what she's going to tell us and then he'll make a decision. Right now, she's definitely doing amazing."
