STUDENT COUNCIL

Four Footed Fotos

by Tom Musgrave

Making his first start for trainer Steve Asmussen, Millennium Farms's homebred Student Council headed Jonesboro in the stretch and kicked clear to a 1 1/4-length win on Saturday in the $500,000 Hawthorne Gold Cup Handicap (G2) at Hawthorne Race Course.

Jonesboro went right to the front and set a pedestrian pace, covering a half-mile in :50.91, six furlongs in 1:15.86, and one mile in 1:40.99. Student Council, who went off at 8-to-5, chased Jonesboro from second, never more than 1 1/2 lengths behind at each point of call in the 1 1/4-mile race.

On the turn, jockey Richard Migliore gave Student Council his cue and the five-year-old Kingmambo horse responded willingly, taking a head lead in early stretch and shaking clear of Jonesboro en route to the clear victory in 2:05 on a track rated fast.

A. P. Arrow, the 9-to-10 favorite, rallied from fourth to finish third, three-quarters of a length behind Jonesboro.

In his previous start, Student Council was a half-length winner of the Pacific Classic Stakes (G1) on August 19 at Del Mar for trainer Vladimir Cerin.

Overall, Student Council has seven wins from 22 starts. With the Hawthorne Gold Cup victory, he surpassed $1-million in earnings, boosting his career bankroll to $1,152,731 in four seasons.

Bred by W. S. Farish, who campaigned him for his first 20 starts before selling the horse to Millennium, Student Council is out of the Kris S. mare Class Kris.
