Richard Glantz’s Solo Survivor, making the first stakes appearance in 29 career starts, collared front-runner Ms. Lydonia in the final strides to post a one-length victory in the $150,000 Arlington Matron Handicap (G3) on Saturday at Arlington Park.

The five-year-old Pleasant Tap mare, under patient handling by jockey Mark Guidry, was last in the six-horse field entering the turn of the 1 1/8-mile race. Ms. Lydonia took advantage of her rail post position and kept to the inside.

Ms. Lydonia, who carried the field through a half-mile in :48.73, six furlongs in 1:13.23, and one mile in 1:37.48, appeared poised to register her third stakes victory and first in a graded stakes race. But Solo Survivor, the longest price on the board at odds of 16.30-to-1, charged through an opening on the rail and drove past for the victory, crossing the finish line in 1:49.94 on a track rated as fast for trainer James DiVito.

Round Heels (Ire), favored at 1.70-to-1, made a mild bid to finish third, 1 1/4 lengths behind Ms. Lydonia.

Bred in Kentucky by Live Oak Stud, Solo Survivor has won six of 29 career starts and has earned $234,195. She is out of the D’Accord mare Dactique.
